If you ask any photographer what would be one of the most asked question after booking a session, it would be “what should I wear?” I wanted to share some tips to help make that process easier for any future family portrait session.
I find it refreshing when families complement one other, but do not like twins. There are countless of images of families that are in jeans or khakis and matching shirts. If you want ageless portrait, look for clothing that coordinate with each other.
Other factor to consider is comfort. Yes, comfort. Being comfortable makes a huge difference when or if you are not so comfortable taking portraits. Which leads me to my next tip, be confident. I know sometimes it is easier said than done. For me, being comfortable and knowing who I am working with goes a long way in feel an extra bit of confident. As for the kids, allow them to be in clothing that them to be themselves.
Once you know your location of your session, it helps to kick a color palette. I find easier when you have something you can refer to help pick colors to wear. Feel free to check out Design-Seeds for more inspiration:
One other tip, do not forget the details. One example is shoes. Picking the wrong shoes and lead to distracting portraits. Another example, the accessories. I believe less is more when if comes to accessorizing your outfit.
For my last tip, have fun. When you have fun it shows and your photographer can capture that joy. This allows the photographer to take that happiness and turn it into beautiful portraits. So yes, have fun and enjoy yourself. For some people, family portraits don’t happen as often as we would like.
